EMDR was discovered in 1989 by
psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro when she noticed that eye
movements reduce the intensity and duration of disturbing thoughts.
It has since evolved through extensive research, studies, and
contributions made by therapists for the treatment of areas such as:
Trauma, Panic Attacks, Complicated Grief, Personality
Disorders, Disturbing Memories, Performance Anxiety, Sexual and/or
Physical Abuse, Pain disorders, Stress Reduction, Phobias, Body
Dysmorphic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and
Addictions.
How does EMDR
work?
“EMDR in some way is able to
“nudge” that material so that it neurologically reconnects with the
healthy brain and then is reprocessed and integrated at an
accelerated speed.
The most popular theory is
that when the eyes move back and forth it creates brain activity
similar to that which occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.
It's during this REM phase (when we dream) that we resolve
conflicts, process information and consolidate learning and memory.
More simply put, information
processing takes place. By creating similar brain activity, while
thinking about the painful event, it appears that EMDR is able to
help the brain finally process the “stuck” material, enabling the
person to arrive at an adaptive resolution. The painful event or
trauma becomes an unfortunate memory but it no longer produces the
emotional pain that it did before.”

What is RDI?
RDI or Resource Development
and Installation is a powerful tool for preparing for and lowering
difficulty and resistance during and EMDR process. It is an
invaluable tool utilized prior to and in the EMDR preparation phase
that greatly supports the best EMDR process possible.
How long does EMDR
take?
One or more sessions are
required so that I may fully understand the the nature of you
problem and assess whether EMDR is appropriate. We also utilize this
time to answer your questions and discuss EMDR more fully.
Once we have agreed that EMDR is appropriate for you we begin the
EMDR therapy process. A typical session is from 50 minutes to 90
minutes. The type of problem you are experiencing, life
circumstances and environment, as well as amount of trauma in you
history will determine how many sessions are needed. EMDR can be
utilized as part of a psychotherapy process, as a treatment process
itself, or as an adjunct therapy by a separate providing
therapist.
